MILLINGTON, Tenn. – Seaman Chanel Campbell, (right), whose mother, Nicole Campbell, lives in Seattle, Washington, was recently named Murph of the Week serving aboard the U.S. Navy warship, USS Michael Murphy, operating out of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Campbell, a 2018 Penn Foster High School graduate, joined the Navy one year ago.

“I joined the Navy so I can have a better future,” said Campbell. “I also made a promise to someone who I was very close with and that has since passed, that no matter where in life I am, I will complete the goals I have set for myself.”Today, Campbell serves as an operations specialist.

Murph of the Week is awarded to a sailor who exemplifies outstanding dedication to duty and superior performance by going above and beyond their assigned job.

Campbell earned the award for their hard work and dedication in keeping a clear operational picture for the fleet and for leading a naval combat team to mission success.

“Being chosen for Murph of the Week has shown me that, even though I may not think anyone is looking at me, there is always someone watching who will notice my hard work,” said Campbell. “I showed a lot of endurance and motivation which caught the attention of my leadership. I hope I have inspired other sailors like me to continue working hard and have shown them that their work matters, even when they feel like it is going unnoticed.”

USS Michael Murphy was named in honor of Lt. Michael P. Murphy, a Navy SEAL, who selflessly gave his life for his shipmates during a reconnaissance mission in Afghanistan as a part of Operation Red Wings. Murphy was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions and his legacy lives on with USS Michael Murphy and her crew of 337 sailors and officers.

According to Navy officials, Michael Murphy is an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer that provides a wide range of warfighting capabilities. A Navy destroyer is a multi-mission ship that can operate independently or as part of a larger group of ships at sea. The ship is equipped with tomahawk missiles, torpedoes, guns and a phalanx close-in weapons system.

As Campbell and other sailors continue to train and perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the U.S. Navy.
