May 19, 2024 QUEENS, New York – Two men riding together on a gas powered moped were struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver Sunday morning, authorities said.
According to police, the pair of men riding the moped were in their 20s or 30s. One moped rider was pronounced dead at the scene, the other was rushed to Elmhurst Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Just before 8:30 am, the moped riders were struck at 80th street by the driver of a Volkswagen vehicle allegedly traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on 57th Street in the Middle Village neighborhood.
The violent impact sent the moped riders flying, and the car careening into a row of parked cars before bursting into flames.
Without any aid rendered to the injured moped riders, the hatchback car driver fled the scene on foot. Police are searching for the fleeing driver with no arrests reported as of Sunday evening.
