The Cross River State Ministry of Health in collaboration with AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Nigeria, today embarked on a road campaign and novelty match betwedn Skin FC and Condom FC to commence celebrations of the International Day of Condom which holds every 13th of February yearly since 1999.
According to the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Inyang Asibong, “the International Condom Day seeks to promote the use of condoms as a means of preventing unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It is an informal observance celebrated in conjunction with Valentine's Day since 2009.
Calabar Municipality Council is on the verge of becoming the first in the world to achieve the 90:90:90 SDG target for HIV, this is can also be attributed to correct and consistent use if condom in the area.
As we saw from the novelty match, Condom use always emerges victorious against STIs and unwanted pregnancies, and thus securing a HIV free generation. This also explains the 5 billion condoms used globally every year.”
The AHF Nigeria head of Office, Calabar, Dr. Ifeanyi, the Director General of the State Agency for the Control Aids (SACA) Dr. Rosemary Inyambe and a host of other dignitaries were on ground to support the campaign and witness the presentation of the winning trophy to the victorious Condom FC.
The Theme of this year's celebration is 'Safer is Fun', and it sought to underline the safety introduced by condom use during sexual intercourse.
