Obubra 2 State Constituency; two Years without Representation —by Richie Romanus

Romanus|5 July 2018
Today makes it exactly one whole year the people of Obubra 2 State Constituency were left with no representation in the Cross River State House of Assembly as it was the day, the seat of the member representing Obubra 2, Hon Elocate Okora was declared vacant by the Cross River State House of Assembly shortly after announcing his defection to the APC having been elected under the platform of PDP.
Till date, I see the move by Hon Elocate Okora as one of the worse political decision to be taken by a politician in recent times. Everything about the move was wrong. It was a move that was purely driven by greed, desperation, self aggrandisement and over ambition. The move was a complete description of an average Nigeria politician who thinks about the next election rather than the next generation.
Am sure that in saner climes, such a man would never be allow to go anywhere near a public office again. You can't sacrifice a position that was given to you base on trust and expect to be rewarded with another.
It is very clear that in taking such a decision, Hon Elocate did not consider the negative impact it could have on his constituents. All he thought was how the move was going to benefit him politically. Instead of using the mandate that was given to him in a platter of gold to give the people quality and effective representation, he rather opted to use it to further his political aspiration. I hope he is feeling fly where ever he is!
Sincerely, part of our problems as an LGA are usually self inflicted. We have in most cases deliberately and stubbornly too refuse to apply wisdom where common wisdom is required. If not, am sure common wisdom should have guided Hon Elocate on the best time to defect if he must defect.
I don't even know how same man who worked closely with Rt Hon Aminu Tambuwal, the then Speaker of the House of Representatives couldn't learn from the Speakers experience during the dying days of that assembly.
Thank God 2019 is by the corner…
