Students of Linguistics and Communication Studies, University of Calabar under the aegis of Linguistics and Communication Studies Students Association (LINCOMSA) honoured Mr. Obaji Akpet, the publisher of CrossRiverEyes.com and creative director of Cross River Studios today with a lecture, which came as part of activities to mark LINCOMSA press week and day of pet talk, even as Akpet clocks 31.
The event, which held at the varsity's Faculty of Art Auditorium by 12 noon today, October 13 also featured Mr. Akpet as the keynote address speaker on the theme 'Linguists and Communicators of the 21st Century: Opportunities, Issues and Prospects.'
In addition, as way to show gratitude, the celebrant offered free masterclasses on photojournalism and the venture of online news publishing.
While the event also to featured cutting of cake as part of Akpet's birthday celebration, discussant sessions, and debates, Nigeria's fast rising gospel artist and graduate of the same department as Akpet, Eli-J, registered live performance at the event.
After backing a Bachelors of Art degree in Linguistics and Communication Studies from the University of Calabar in 2014, Akpet remains one of those known young entrepreneurs from Cross River calving a niche in the field of journalism, photography and filmmaking; and currently publishes CrossRiverEyes.com while also doubling as founder of Cross River Studios.
While as a student of the University of Calabar, Akpet made history as first year one student to hold position of Speaker of Faculty of Arts Students Parliament and later as LINCOMSA president; and nominated as most versatile student by John Udeh led LINCOMSA administration.
While as president of the department students' association, Akpet began publishing Campus Orbit, a weekly campus bulletin that could not be sustained after he graduated from school.
He was, in 2011 arrested for his strong activist stance by the University of Calabar authority during Prof James Epoke's reign as Vice Chancellor but was released on grounds that the case lacked merits.
In a media statement, chairman of Social Committee o LINCOMSA, the association honouring the keynote speaker, Kennedy Eteng, who considers the event historic said the event will avail students the opportunity to get to know who Akpet is while tapping into his wealth of resource.
