Sequel to the announcement of Theresa May as the Prime Minister of Britain on 14 July, this is what a Cross River-born social commentator based in Lagos had to say:
The only problem I have with incoming British Prime Minister, Theresa May is, she was the Home Secretary between 2010 and this year. Its the equivalent of the interior minister in Nigeria (and other countries) an office which is responsible for immigration and other immigration related stuff.
Speaking as an African, her policies were very unfriendly as she kept changing the rules every other month to make life difficult for African and Asian immigrants and stifle emigration from the aforementioned continents. The most recent being the 35,000 GBP wage cap; as minimum wage earnable for non-EU immigrants. Those earning beneath that band would be susceptible to deportation and this took effect April this year.
I see her making life a bit tougher for immigrants now that she will be given more powers. Brexit will even make it worse especially for EU immigrants, as they'll now be affected by the home office's harsh policies.
Do you think Utsu has a point? With Cross Riverians, Nigerians and Africans heavily present in the UK, Utsu may have a point. What do you think?
