In what is evolving into a recurrent decimal in the streets of the ancient city of Calabar, reputed for peace, tranquility and hospitality yesterday 8 June became the day when death came visiting, in the most gruesome manner, to a youth.
In what is suspected to be a product of an ongoing cold war between rival cult groups in the state capital city, the life of a young man, in his prime, was cruelly brought to an end.
The incident took place along Mayne Avenue Road by Palm Street around 5pm. Residents of Calabar were seen to be running helter skelter as a set of irate youths butchered a young man to death in broad day light and in full public glare!
There was pandemonium as residents ran in either ways away from the scene of operation of these disorientated youths. Some, who were going about their normal businesses and moving along Mayne Avenue, from Atakpa and Atamunu streets to Palm Street or adjoining streets had to reroute to Webber Street; while those moving from the either half of Palm Street had to reroute back to Elijah Henshaw, Atu, Ekondo, Bassey Edem, Ekpo Abasi etc streets. Those in automobiles feared for their lives as their drivers were in total confusion as to which route to engage or not.
The lifeless body of the fair-skinned, handsome young man lay in the pool of his blood on the pavement of drainage bordering Mayne Avenue Road until men of the Nigerian Police Force came along to take away the corpse.
It is quite obvious there is an ongoing cold war between rival cult gangs, it is claiming lives in its bits. I am calling on the Executive Governor of Cross River State, and every other relevant security agencies to rise to the challenge of wading into the matter and contain it now before the once peaceful, tranquil and hospitable ancient capital city is converted into an open theater of war where scores of human lives would drop in their numbers by men of the underworld.
