Yesterday 9 June, a cross section of staff of Calabar Urban Development Authority (CUDA) protested the non payment of the salaries.

Recently, an online news portal reported how about 500 of these staff were laid off their jobs for protesting the non payment of their salaries. Some are reportedly owed the sum for 22 months, others are owed 3, 4 and 7 months.

It's further rumoured that the Executive Governor of Cross River State, Sen. Prof. Ben Ayade, had approved the payment of their salaries but the Commissioner for Environment, Mike Eraye, has refused to disburse the cash.

It's quite unfortunate that the state government is owing some staff of its work force while others are paid two months upfront.

Payment of salaries is not a privilege, it is a right.
