CALABAR – In response to the recent cruise boat accident at the Marina Resort that resulted in the loss of lives and endangered the safety of passengers, Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has issued a series of directives to address the situation. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, June 24, 2023, involved 14 medical students, with three feared dead and 11 successfully rescued.
This was contained in a press release signed by the chief press secretary to Governor Bassey Otu. The statement noted that the governor has taken immediate action to ensure the safety of residents and visitors alike. The following directives have been issued:
Indefinite Suspension of Cruise Operations: All cruise boat operations and other activities at the Marina Resort have been suspended indefinitely. This decision aims to prevent any further accidents and safeguard the lives of individuals using the facilities. The suspension will remain in effect until further notice.
Meeting with Cruise Boat Operators and State Tourism Bureau: The cruise boat operators, in conjunction with the management of the State Tourism Bureau, have been summoned to attend a meeting at the Office of the Secretary to the State Government on Tuesday, June 27th, 2023, at 12 pm. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the recent incident and implement measures to enhance safety and prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Safety Assessment of Calabar Waterways: The State Ministry of Transport has been instructed to conduct an immediate cross-check of the safety standards and conditions of all boats operating in the Calabar waterways. This thorough assessment will ensure that proper safety measures are in place to protect passengers and prevent any potential accidents.
Accelerated Investigation and Prosecution: The Governor has urged the police to expedite their investigations into the fatal boat accident. Those found responsible for any negligence or wrongdoing will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
