The Executive Secretary, Calabar Urban Development Authority (CUDA), Mr Joe- Mary Ekeng Ita has told Transporters in the State to see government’s efforts in environmental sanitation as an activity that must be done and not as an interference.
Mr Ita gave the admonition during a meeting with commercial Transport Associations in his office in Calabar.
He said gone were the days where people continue to do the wrong things,we must accept new things because the government of the day is working assiduously to ensure the health of its people is guaranteed through sanitation as most disease emanate from the environment.
The Executive Secretary urged them to be good Ambassadors of change by inculcating in their families, colleagues and commuters, positive attitudes to the environment through proper waste disposal.
According to CUDA Boss, the essence of the meeting was to informed them of the new development in the sector in which every commercial vehicle must own a waste basket in his vehicle for ease of waste disposal by commuters and charged them to always encourage passengers to use them.
He said the State is already known for cleanliness thus the tempo must be maintained and sustained.
In a remark, the Leader of the Association, Mr Victor Eyo said there was need to issue a circular to all Transport Associations on the new directives to avoid excuses of ignorance, adding that the re-introduction of waste basket will help to check indiscriminate dumping of waste by commutters thereby improving environmental sanitation in the metropolis and the State as a whole.
Mr Eyo further said the issue should be given a holistic approach by extending the directives to private vehicles owners.
He called on the authority to synergies with relevant Ministries Departments and Agencies to avoid duplication of functions and payments which may lead to litigation.
