We’re gearing up for what’s shaping up to be a grand weekend for the fighting game community as Evo Japan promises not only world class competition across multiple titles, but also strong potential for new reveals and updates.
This process has already begun as publisher Bushiroad Games and developer Eighting (Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Bloody Roar) have released a full 13 minutes of gameplay footage (via CAG Osaka) for the recently announced three on three fighting game: Hunter x Hunter Nen Impact.
We’re introduced to six of the game’s characters as they’re selected amid a roster that currently has room for 16; with Hunter x Hunter being a work in progress, this early visual may or may not represent what the final product will look like.
These are the same six fighters we saw in the sneak peek footage that saw them walking out onto the battlefield, but cut before any actual fighting went down. Their names are Hisoka, Netero, Leorio, Killua, Kurapika, and Gon.
Players form their teams of three and then get to secretly choose their order before the match begins. The action is instantly recognizable as characters zip about the screen with speedy mobility, (thanks in no small part to ground and air dashes) rapid combos, and assist maneuvers.
Games like Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Dragon Ball FighterZ quickly come to mind as the characters engage in similar movements while depleting health gauges, building super meter gauges, and inching always closer to an “Overgear” comeback mechanic.
We get to see five Ultimate Attacks play out during the course of the footage, which take us into brief animation sequences as characters rifle off their most powerful techniques.
Gon grows from being a rather tiny child into a hulking giant version of himself in order to punt and then wind up punch his opponent’s health bar into oblivion. The spry Killua launches into a flurry of electricity-fused attacks while Leorio performs repeated ground pounds.
Here are a handful of stills from the video showing off some of the high octane clashes and Ultimate Attacks. You can watch team CAG get into it via the full embed below.
