Professor Ivara Esu, Deputy Governor of Cross River State with Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officers in Calabar |
The State Government has made passionate appeal to the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency look into the repairs of all dilapidated Federal Roads in the State which are in a state of disrepair with a view to reduce the untold hardship experience by commuters plying the roads.
The State Deputy Governor Prof. Ivara Ejemot Esu made this appeal when the Assistant Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, National Headquarters, Abuja Dr. Kayode Olagunju and some top officers of the corps within and outside the State paid him a courtesy visit in government house, Calabar.
Prof. Esu stressed that the appeal has become necessary in the wake of the nearly not motorable state of federal roads which has almost grounded the economic and social life of our people.
He stressed that in order for the newly introduced Federal Road Safety Corps Speed Limit Device programme to be effective and relevant to us as a State, there is absolute need for properly constructed motorable roads to power the programme.
The Deputy Governor then stated that there is need for education, enlightenment and awareness creation as well as eye testing programme for official government drivers and others as a measure in reducing road crises on our roads and ensuring safety.
He charged the FRSC operatives to see their duties as a responsibility to enlighten and encourage other motorists to obey the law and enforce the right things instead of insisting on payment of fines.
Prof. Esu spoke on the need for collaboration with State Transport Agencies for effective enlightenment to enable FRSC achieve its set objective while also calling on the commission to further direct that Sundays should be declared free as traffic offence free day for motorists to allow people to attend worship.
Earlier in his presentation, the Assistant Corps Marshal of the FRSC Dr. Kayode Olagunju intimated that he was in the State for a 5-day working visit on enlightenment campaign for the “Ember” months safety measures on the roads because of its associated heavy traffic.
He stated further that the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mohamadu Buhari has approved that the FRSC should commence the implementation of the Speed Limit Device Programme on October 1st 2016 across the Country.
