Manchester United chief John Murtough is expected to leave Old Trafford by the end of the week as INEOS effect their changes to the top brass at United, as reported by The Athletic.
Murtough leaves Old Trafford after ten years of service to the club in different roles, most recently as director of football.
Long time owners and now part-time owners, The Glazers, confirmed the news earlier today.
Joel Glazer, co-chairman of Manchester United, said: “After 11 years of tireless work for the club, John has mutually agreed with us that now is the right time to step aside and allow the new football leadership structure to be put in place.”
“He will always be welcome back at Manchester United as a friend of the club.” Joel concluded.
The new INEOS structure is set to take over as soon as possible, with both Omar Berrada and Dan Ashworth expected to take over roles being vacated like Murtough’s.
Ashworth will be taking over as sporting director, a position that encompasses what Murtough did for the club.
The fans are extremely hopeful the revamped board with be the first step in creating a new era, the Sir Jim era and judging by their CVs, they have the experience and know how to properly run a club.
Murtough’s departure will perhaps be greeted with measured optimism from United fans, as Murtough oversaw a period of gross underachieving as a club. Moreover, he had a huge hand in some of the big money signings that went on to flop, like Antony.
One thing in particular that he had lots of control over was the decision to hire Erik ten Hag, according to this particular The Athletic report.
It remains to be seen what next for Murtough, but he still has a decent reputation around England having previously worked at Fulham and Everton, so there is a chance some opportunities my come his way.
