Manchester United are currently embroiled in a heating would-be search for a new manager in the event that they decide to let go of Erik ten Hag at the end of the season.
They have been linked with numerous managers time and time again this season, but it is still early days, there being no clarity on what happens beyond June.
One of the managers they have been linked with is Graham Potter, and they now have a clear path for the former Brighton and Chelsea manager.
As reported yesterday by Sky Sports, Potter has turned down the opportunity to manager Ajax, which clears the way for the Manchester United job.
This coupled by Potter’s great working relationship with incoming sporting director Dan Ashworth further fuels the chances of Potter making the switch to United.
He has previously worked with the executive in his Brighton days, and it probably wouldn’t take much to convince him.
Potter was last month pictured with Ashworth, as rumoured continue to circulate that United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is a fan of Potter.
Potter turning down the Ajax job strengthens his position, and it could be argued he did so for the sole reason of being available when United potentially come calling.
Sky had also reported the English manager had rejected French outfit Lyon’s advances a while ago.
Ajax, four-time European champions are also having a poor season and at the weekend, lost 6-0 to bitter rivals, Feyenoord.
Following another horrible performance against Liverpool, the uncertainty around ten Hag keeps building and building.
The Dutch manager has between now and the end of the season to try and salvage what has already been more of a forfeit than a season.
An F.A Cup and Champions League qualification just may be enough to salve the sour taste that has been this campaign.
