Mortal Kombat 1 drops but stays on the charts too
Tekken 8 finally hit the scene almost two months ago already, and things are still looking pretty strong for the Bandai Namco fighter.
The NPD Group / Circana recently released their video game industry report for the month of February 2024 where Tekken 8 is still performing impressively, and Mortal Kombat 1 remains holding on to the charts.
For overall game sales in the United States in February via Mat Piscatella, Tekken 8 clocked in at fifth for its first full month with the combined copies moved across PlayStation 5, Xbox and PC via Steam.
It’s first month was technically even more impressive since it was second place behind Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 despite only being out a few days in January, but it seems the 3D fighting game may not have dropped at all if it weren’t for some huge blockbuster hits like Helldivers 2 and Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth slamming down on the market (as well as Skull and Bones interestingly enough).

As of March 2, Tekken 8 was still number three on the top selling games in the U.S. for 2024 where it got pushed down a space by Helldivers, but was still beating out FF7R (though we have a feeling that may not carry over for another month).
On PlayStation, Tekken 8 went from second place to ranked eighth for the platform specific charts while it went from fourth to fifth on Xbox.

PC sales aren’t specifically listed, but according to SteamSpy, Tekken 8 has sold somewhere between 500,000 and 1 million copies on there alone.
No fighting games ranked on any of the top 10 most played games by monthly active users for the major platforms, but that’s not really a surprise at this point.
Mortal Kombat 1 also continued its streak on the NPD charts where it clocked in at 18th for February after hitting 15th in January, so the NetherRealm Studios fighter is still performing though seemingly not at as strong of a pace as Mortal Kombat 11.

The year to date sales saw MK1 drop from 15th to 19th last month too, so they may no longer make the charts for the top 20 come March or April at this rate.
Street Fighter 6 hasn’t charted in the U.S. top 20 since August last year, but we do know the game reached 3 million sales earlier this year.

Bandai Namco did announce Tekken 8 crossed over 2 million sales worldwide just a month after release almost exactly one month ago, so it joined SF6 and MK1 in hitting those big goals out the gate, which is nice to see for the genre as a whole.
It’d certainly be interesting though to know what they’re at now after their second full month, but we’ll probably hear about it breaking the next milestone when it actually happens.
