There’s no way to know for sure but MC Mura brings up a very intriguing point in his latest video concerning the near future of Street Fighter 6: the game’s newest character may reveal some of the broader directions developers are planning to head in.
Ed jumped into the fray as the third DLC character right at the end of February and already we notice some trends with his global tools that would be interesting if applied to the rest of the cast.
Mura rightly points out a good example of this from the not too distant past when Guile was released as part of the first batch of DLC characters in Street Fighter 5. Shoryuken type reversals were, in the first season of SF5, invincible without the use of any meter, but Guile’s Flash Kick was conspicuously not.
This was a fairly major disadvantage as Guile would have to use the EX version of his Flash Kick to garner the same invincibility many others had for free, but this wouldn’t stay the case forever.
Capcom made a number of global changes in the transition from SF5’s first to second year, (anti-air lights, throw loops, lingering hurtboxes in neutral to name a few) and it would eventually come to pass that none of the non-EX wake up reversals would retain invincibility.
With all this in mind as well as the fact that we know Capcom is already very much in the midst of making changes to the game (they rolled out a handful along with Ed) a closer look at the options Ed has may hint at what’s to come for Street Fighter 6.
