River City Ransom, a video game for the Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1989, would come to be known as “Street Gangs” in the PAL regions. Though it was a game designed to be an open world beat ’em up, the theme of the game feels like it would fit nicely within the Street Fighter universe, especially considering how Street Fighter 6’s World Tour mode functions as a beat ’em up and fighting game hybrid.
It seems that one fan of River City Ransom and Street Fighter, Togashicaro, has opted to recreated Street Fighter character sprites as a homage to River City Ransom. More specifically, recreations for combatants in Street Fighter 3: Third Strike and Street Fighter 6 have been released on Twitter.
Due to the simple design of River City Ransom, every fighter has a near identical body type. Regardless of their stances in the Street Fighter series, they all adopt a River City Ransom stance in these depictions.
For Street Fighter 3: Third Strike, sprite recreations have been created for Q, Oro, Akuma, Urien, Gill, Sean, Ken, Ryu, Chun-Li, Remy, Elena, Makoto, Alex, Yun, Yang, Twelve, Necro, Dudley, Ibuki, and Hugo. As of right now, none of the characters introduced in Street Fighter 3 and its revisions have shown up in Street Fighter 6.
Meanwhile, Street Fighter 6’s roster of Ed, A.K.I., JP, Marisa, Manon, Lily, Ken, Ryu, Chun-Li, Jamie, Luke, Kimberly, Juri, Cammy, Guile, Rashid, Dee Jay, Dhalsim, E. Honda, Blanka, and Zangief have also been reduced into River City Ransom sprites. We don’t have Akuma in Street Fighter 6, but it’s possible the sprite artist may depict him after his release.
