Can a free play weekend and major discount turn struggles around for Mortal Kombat 1?

Though the recent DLC introduction of John Cena’s Peacemaker has made something of a splash, Mortal Kombat 1 hasn’t been scoring many flawless victories as of late.

Beyond complaints about balance and micro transactions, (which are commonplace for vanilla versions of most fighting games these days) issues with crossplay and somewhat foreboding plans from Warner Bros. have been among the most recent obstacles the game has faced. Warner Bros. is aiming to lure fans back to kombat, however, by making the game free this weekend and knocking off a substantial amount of the cover price for those who wish to stick around after.

The free trial weekend began early Thursday morning at 9 a.m. PST and will run for a full four days until Sunday, March 10 at 11:59 p.m. PST. This is extended to users on all platforms except for the Nintendo Switch, and those who choose to purchase the game during this window will receive a 40% discount.

The trial version of Mortal Kombat 1 includes access to all online and local multiplayer modes, the first two chapters of the Story mode, Johnny Cage’s Mansion tutorial Mesa in Invasions mode, and access to the base roster of playable characters.

What’s more, any and all progress and transactions players make during their trial run will be ported over to their full game should they decide to go ahead and purchase MK1 afterwards.

For any and all additional questions about the particulars of the free to play weekend, including instructions obtaining it on all available platforms, you can hit up the FAQ on the Mortal Kombat 1 website.
