Although there was no character reveals coming out of the wild finish at Capcom Cup X, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t any news about Street Fighter 6.
Following the conclusion of crowning the first champion for the game, Capcom announced the Capcom Pro Tour 2024 season.
After showing a trailer for the new year of competition, Capcom President and COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto took to the stage to talk about prizing and what to expect.
“We had a ‘special’ prize pool for this year to celebrate the first year of Street Fighter 6,” said Tsujimoto. “Thanks to everyone we had an amazing tournament. Next year’s overall prize pool distribution will be similar to previous years.
However, Capcom is looking forward to the second season of Street Fighter 6 tournaments, so we want to make the most out of this opportunity. So next year’s first place prize money for Capcom Cup will be $1 million.”
The Capcom Pro Tour 2024 is set to kick off in June. They don’t say what or where that’s going to be, but if it’s an offline event, the CEO 2024 is looking like a prime candidate.
This also means massive tournaments like Evo Japan 2024 and Combo Breaker 2024 will not be part of the CPT again.
One of the biggest complaints about this first SF6 season was there only being 3 offline Premier events, which will hopefully be changing in 2024.
The trailer does specifically mention online and offline tournaments are going to be involved, but to what extent they haven’t said yet.
This June timeframe also points to Akuma and the season 2 balance changes being released by this point, which falls in line with the current Spring release window for the demon.
The mention of a return to previous prize structures is an interesting one considering the jump we saw this year and could lead to a sharp drop for Capcom Cup Xi overall.
Although the $1 million grand prize remains the same, second place received $300,000 this year as opposed to $50,000 at Capcom Cup IX. Third and fourth got $200,000 and $100,000 respectively just now and $20,000 and $10,000 last year.
That would make quite the disparity, but CCX was the biggest fighting game prize pool we’ve ever really seen in this space — so it’s also not that surprising it wouldn’t stack up for a follow-up.
Capcom hasn’t updated the CPT website as of the time of reporting, so we really only have the trailer and Tsujimoto’s words to go on for now.
