The next Kameo Fighter set to join Mortal Kombat 1 as DLC is none other than Janet Cage. This alternate timeline, female version of Johnny Cage will be able to help you in battle come March, and she has some interesting tools at her disposal.
NetherRealm Studios recently released Peacemaker and Janet Cage’s initial gameplay reveal trailer, and while fans were quick to spot the similarities between Janet and Johnny, it appears the developers also loaded a super deep cut reference into this character that most of us likely missed. One of Janet’s techniques actually appears to be a call back to the very first Mortal Kombat game, but it’s not something that a lot of people are probably familiar with.
Longtime Mortal Kombat fan and prominent commentator/content creator PND Ketchup took notice of this well hidden Easter egg that your average fan likely would have never spotted. This is the kind of reference only someone who is deeply invested in the franchise, especially the competitive side, could ever find.
“Janet Cage Kameo has an ambush assist that looks strikingly familiar to a 30 year old combo,” starts Ketchup. “Absolutely love that the very first MK even got some gameplay love here, was NOT expecting it “
In the new Mortal Kombat 1 trailer, we see Janet pull off an assist that sees her perform a swift jumping punch. She does it up to three times in a row, juggling the opponent the entire time.
Apparently, the inspiration for this was pulled from the very first Mortal Kombat game. As Ketchup shows, Janet’s assist looks a lot like a classic Johnny Cage combo with which he juggles the opponent with a similar jumping punch repeatedly.
So, yes, Mortal Kombat 1 is getting a reference from… Mortal Kombat 1.
