Don't expect any big Street Fighter 6 announcements at Capcom Cup X

We’re just a few days away from the start of Street Fighter 6’s first world championship event, and it seems like fans are going to need to temper their expectations beyond the competition itself.

Capcom released a statement tonight ahead of the start of Capcom Cup X regarding any announcements being made at the big event.

“Congratulations to the talented players who will be competing to be the first Street Fighter 6 Capcom Cup Champion!” begins Capcom’s statement. “As we will be focused on the competition at hand, we’d like to provide advance notice that there won’t be any new gameplay or content reveals at Capcom Cup X. However, there will be more eSports news coming at Capcom Cup X, so stay tuned!”

While the early communication is appreciated to not get fans’ hopes up, the timing is still a bit odd considering they just released Ed’s gameplay reveal trailer last week out of nowhere.

Yes, he’s releasing just over a day after Capcom Cup ends, but multiple times the developers did announce a new character / season over the course of Street Fighter 5’s life and released them shortly after finals too.

The timing did raise suspicions that Akuma would be receiving a trailer at Capcom Cup next weekend and perhaps a glimpse at Season 2’s balance for SF6, but that’s basically confirmed to not be happening at all now.

Since there seemingly won’t even be a teaser for the demon, Akuma’s Spring release window is looking more likely for May or June now instead of March or April.

It also pretty much disconfirms the rumor that Street Fighter 6 would be updated to the Season 2 balance patch before the start of Red Bull Kumite 2024.

Instead, what we’ll probably end up seeing is early information for the start of the Capcom Pro Tour 2024 season as well as Street Fighter League and any other new eSports projects Capcom currently is cooking up.

Capcom Cup X is set to start this Friday, February 16, with three days dedicated to the Last Chance Qualifier tournament to see which of the 321 competitors who signed up from around the world will join the finalists.

The final 48 players will perform in group stages for the following three days before getting to the Street Fighter League World Championship on February 24 and then the Capcom Cup Finals the 25th to see who takes home the $1 million top prize.
