ESAM releases a new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tier list

A lot of folks in the fighting game community are currently digging deep into Street Fighter 6, Mortal Kombat 1, and Tekken 8. However, there still exists a very dedicated fan base for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and its competitive scene.

Though we haven’t seen a balance patch in a while, the tier rankings continue to move and shake as high level players continue to unlock the potential of some of their favorite fighters. The #1 Pikachu player in the world, ESAM, recently put together an updated Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tier list, and in it made quite a few major changes to the overall rankings.

ESAM’s latest YouTube video takes a deep dive into the updated tier list and provides reasons for many of the placements. One big change right out of the gate is we see the addition of a “Super Top Tier” category, which is reserved only for the absolute elites.

Residing in said category are Steve as #1 (to no one’s surprise), then we see Pikachu, Game & Watch, and Sonic. He does explain, however, that Pikachu, Game & Watch, and Sonic are all tied for the #2, #3, and #4 spots, meaning they are all interchangeable in these positions here.

One interesting choice ESAM makes sees him bump Sephiroth, the big Final Fantasy 7 villain down from upper high tier to just high tier. ESAM notes that he feels Sephiroth is worse than Rosalina, but his saving grace is that he actually does well against Steve, who is the best in the entire game.

We also see ESAM drop Pyra and Mythra down several slots taking her from 6th overall in the game to 12th. He notes that she is still ridiculously good, but that she just isn’t quite as incredible as some people think.
