Masahiro’s Sakurai incredible ambition over the last 10 or so years as led to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a finished product, something Sakurai himself muses as potentially being his “life’s work.” It’s said that there are 190 gaming series represented in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in some form, all faithful to each source IP’s wishes. Truly, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a celebration of gaming.
We likely have Masahiro Sakurai to thank for all of this, but one has to wonder how is it that Sakurai is able to be so knowledgeable about all these game series. As it turns out, Sakurai himself is an avid gamer and fan of all sorts of games.
In a special crossover video with the Retro Game Master, the self-proclaimed “Father of all Let’s Plays,” we get a glimpse at Sakurai’s playing skills and knowledge during a competition between these two men. It seems that Sakurai planned out which games they’d be playing and has chosen to stick to an arcade theme — more specifically, “The Space Invaders Decade.”
As such, the two compete in challenges for Space Invaders, Galaxian, Asteroids, Pac-Man, Crazy Climber, Scramble, Donkey Kong, Dig Dug, and Moon Patrol. Fans of the Super Smash Bros. should already know how Galaxian, Pac-Man, and Donkey Kong are relevant in Smash Ultimate, though Sakurai does to point out that 75m is a stage in the latest entry of the series.
Sakurai appears to be rather confident of his playing skills as he’s handicapped to only one chance. A single mistake could be costly, which are particularly easy to make while the two are conversing. As for the Retro Game Master, he gets two or three chances before losing a challenge.
