The U.S. government has long enlisted American musicians to travel the world and forge connections, even in countries where political ties to the United States have been limited.

From the Jazz Ambassadors’ shows in southern Europe and the Soviet Union during the Cold War to the Philadelphia Orchestra’s tour of the People’s Republic of China in 1973, American performers have set aside political differences for the joy of music.

Now, as the State Department advances new partnerships that will use music to advance education and society, we invite you to experience The Unifying Power of Music, a multimedia tour of performances that have shaped America’s music diplomacy.
