Peace Restored in Yakurr Following NYCN Election Crisis — Nurse Emmanuel Olayi at the Center of Peace Building

·

Calm has returned to Yakurr Local Government Area after tensions stemming from the recent National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) elections for the Yakurr Chapter. What was once a charged political atmosphere has now transitioned into a season of reconciliation, thanks to a public display of unity between the newly elected Coordinator, Comrade Balimwor Ekpe, and his closest rival, Comrade Sunday Igri.

The post-election period had been clouded by division and uncertainty, raising alarms among stakeholders over the cohesion and future of the Council.

However, during the formal succession ceremony held at Kizito Attah Square in Ekori, Comr. Ekpe made a symbolic gesture by publicly shaking hands with Comr. Igri and bestowing upon him the honorary title of Youthful Peace Ambassador.

This moment of reconciliation was greeted with loud applause and has since been widely praised as a turning point in restoring unity within the Council. In his speech, Comr. Ekpe emphasized that healing and collaboration were essential, especially given that he and Comr. Igri hail from the same community. He called for a united front in youth leadership, describing the gesture as a step toward collective progress.

Comr. Igri, in turn, graciously accepted the title and pledged his unwavering support for the newly constituted leadership. He expressed readiness to work with Comr. Ekpe in advancing the objectives of the NYCN Yakurr Chapter.

Delivering remarks on behalf of the NYCN State Chairman, HY Comr: Emmanuel Olayi, the State Vice Chairman (Central), Comr. Evalsam Ekpe, stressed the importance of peace in youth politics. “The Council exist to foster friendship, not conflict,” he said. “Every youth has the right to aspire for leadership, but our strength lies in moving beyond rivalry to build together.” He applauded both Comr. Ekpe and Comr. Igri for their maturity and called on other chapters to emulate this example.

The event was attended by key stakeholders across the state, including:

Hon. Edu Oyike, Councillor representing Epenty Ward, Hon. Womi Kere, Councillor representing Ntan Ward, Comr Ofem Okoi, State Organizing Secretary Central, Comr. Obuli Arikpo, Immediate Past Coordinator, NYCN Yakurr, NYCN Coordinators from Abi and Obubra LGAs, A representative of the Obol Lopon of Ekori, Numerous youth leaders, observers, and community members

Observers have described the peaceful transition and public display of solidarity as a promising sign for the future of youth leadership in Yakurr. The development is being heralded as a foundation for deeper collaboration, inclusive governance, and the implementation of sustainable youth-centered initiatives.

With tensions now eased and unity restored, it is believed that the NYCN Yakurr Chapter stands prepared to usher in a new era of purposeful leadership and service to the youth constituency.
