The modding community for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 has come a ridiculously and impressively long way from where things stood less than two years ago, but they aren’t done with it yet.
Despite all of the progress, there still remained a few major hurdles to getting the complete custom dreamscape we’ve all wished for, and some of that hard work is starting to bear fruit.
Familiar modders like Tabs, Eternal Yoshi and Xeno lately have been showing off clips of new animations running in UMvC3 on PC.
This may not sound all that huge, but it’ll be exceptionally game changing once they get the process fully ironed out.
You can see when i first started that at certain key poses some of the them looked completely dull and didn’t feel right. So i went back in and looked at his mvc2 sprites again to get it just right. pic.twitter.com/xAQhbTk3Iq

Up until this point, you couldn’t insert any new animations into Marvel 3, so modders have been forced to reuse existing ones already present to pull off what they need to.
That of course limits what is technically possible for someone looking to make custom content like new characters, but figuring out a way to get new animations in would kick the door open to almost limitless possibilities (like breakdancing).

It appears the modding group has figured out a way to use the Blender animation program to aid them in this process though things still seem to be a work in progress for now.
On top of brand new animations, this would allow existing animations from other games to be theoretically ported into UMvC3.
Tabs has already shown off a bit of this by putting Ultron’s Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite animations onto his Ultron mod for Marvel 3.
note you can see a lot of weirdness re: the root point that’s either a result of the tool (which is still a very early wip) or my complete lack of blender experience idk

When this proves to be fully realized, then the only last remaining hurdle we can think of from turning UMvC3 into a proper platform that can be upgraded and played forever is rollback netcode, which is also being worked on but much farther off still from being in the hands of the public.
Over the past two years, the Marvel modders have figured out not only how to add custom character models and more to the game but also adding new fighter slots as well to solve the issue of new ones overlapping with the originals.
they’re true ports from MVCI using a WIP blender tool thing rather than mvc3 stuff that’s been warped to look ‘close enough’

We also have the Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Community Edition mod pack in the works that sets out to compile many of the most popular characters together in what could be a definitive collection one day.
This is also the same group of modders who dug through the early files of the original Marvel vs. Capcom 3 to discover the first remaining assets of Doctor Octopus and other cut content that never made it in.
The future for the Marvel modding community continues to look up, and we’re very excited to see where they will take it through their hard work and dedication.
