Slimmer PlayStation 5 models announced for the 2023 holiday season

A new model for the PlayStation 5 has been announced on the PlayStation Blog. While these models of the PlayStation 5 are noticeably slimmer, it should be noted that PlayStation Blog never refers to the consoles as a “PlayStation 5 Slim” like the “PlayStation 4 Slim” before it.

Regardless, slimmer versions of the PlayStation 5 are scheduled to hit the stores sometime in November. It’s also stated that these versions of the PlayStation 5 will become the standard versions of the PlayStation 5. Once the current version of the PlayStation 5 is sold out, the slimmer PlayStation 5 will become the only model that will be available at retail.

What’s odd about these slimmer PlayStation 5 models is that the pricing is no better than the current standard PlayStation 5 models. In fact, the digital version of the slimmer PlayStation 5 is actually more expensive than the standard digital PlayStation 5.

The slimmer disc PlayStation 5 is being priced at 499.99 USD — the same as the standard disc PlayStation 5. As for the slimmer digital PlayStation 5, it’s being priced at 449.99 USD which is 50 USD more than the standard PlayStation 5.

However, there are some notable improvements with the new PlayStation 5 models over the older models. Just as one might expect, these new versions of the console are far less bulkier.

Both models of the slimmer PlayStation 5 are said to have 30% less volume. Additionally, the new models weigh 24% and 30% less than their standard counterparts.

Most impressively, the slimmer PlayStation 5 units will have 1TB of storage, an improvement over the 825GB storage from before. This means more room for other games.

It should also be noted that a separate Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive for the slimmer digital PlayStation 5 model will be on sale for 79.99 USD. The price for this will overall make the digital model more expensive than simply getting the disc version, but it will be more suitable for transportation.
