The lawmaker representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan arrived in the state on Tuesday to a heroic reception from supporters.
The state government on Monday banned rallies and processions by the senator’s supporters in the state.
The Kogi State Police Command had also warned Akpoti-Uduaghan to cancel her planned homecoming event to celebrate the Sallah festival with her constituents over security concerns.
The senator, who arrived in the state in a white helicopter, was received by her supporters from five local government areas that make up the senatorial district in Ihima, Okehi LGA.
The jubilant supporters danced to music and erupted in cheers as Akpoti-Uduaghan touched down from the helicopter that brought her from Abuja.
In her remark, the lawmaker said she was in the state to celebrate the Eid-el-Fitr with her constituents.
She said: “Yesterday (Monday), we heard on the news that rallies and gatherings will not be allowed, that roads will be blocked, and convoys leading into the state will not be allowed.
“I knew that we were the targets. But then I said, this is not political season, this is not campaign time.
“We are not having a rally. This is just me, the Senator representing Kogi Central, coming down to her people to celebrate this festive time – the Sallah with you, and there is nothing wrong with that.
“I am breaking no law. This is Nigeria. We have the right to be free, to express our choice in gatherings and celebrations.”
