NASU Threatens Shutdown Of WAEC Offices Nationwide

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has given the management of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) a seven-day ultimatum to address its four-point demand regarding workers’ welfare and the alleged victimisation of labour leaders.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos on Monday, NASU general secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, warned that failure to meet their demands would result in a nationwide shutdown of all WAEC offices starting Monday, March 24.

“If the management does not take immediate action, all WAEC offices across the country will be shut down indefinitely,” Adeyemi declared.

The union insisted that its grievances must be urgently addressed to protect the rights and well-being of its members.

Recall that WAEC workers, in December 2024, embarked on an indefinite nationwide strike over an alleged reluctance of management to increase workers’ salaries by 30 per cent, and the refusal to reinstate four junior workers who were allegedly wrongfully dismissed at the Ikeja Zonal Office of the examination body.

The congress chairman of the WAEC branch of NASU, Mr. Kayode Ogunyade, had alleged that the union had engaged the management of WAEC Nigeria several times in the recent past to highlight the need to improve staff welfare and increase their salaries by 135 per cent.

He added that workers demanded a salary increase of this percentage across all cadres and levels (ECSS 1-17), to enable them to meet their financial obligations to their families due to the harsh economy.

However, three days after embarking on the strike, the workers had called it off, stating that it had reached an agreement with the organisation’s management.

The workers had agreed to settle for a 27.5 per cent salary increase across cadres instead of 30 per cent they were agitating for.

Three months after the initial strike, the workers are downing their tools again to give the management a seven-day ultimatum to address their four-point demand.
