The U.S. President, Donald Trump, has accused Iran of being behind Yemen’s Houthi rebels’ attacks, warning of severe repercussions for their actions.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Monday, Trump declared that any further aggression by the Houthis would be met with overwhelming force and that Iran, as their alleged benefactor, would bear full responsibility.
“Let nobody be fooled! The hundreds of attacks being made by Houthi, the sinister mobsters and thugs based in Yemen, who are hated by the Yemeni people, all emanate from, and are created by, IRAN,” Trump wrote.
He accused Iran of arming, financing, and guiding the Houthis, stating that, “Every shot fired by the Houthis will be looked upon, from this point forward, as being a shot fired from the weapons and leadership of IRAN, and IRAN will be held responsible, and suffer the consequences, and those consequences will be dire!”
The U.S. government had on Sunday launched a wave of airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen.
The strikes, which the US called “decisive and powerful,” resulted in the deaths of at least 53 people, including civilians, BBC reported, citing Houthi sources.
In response, the Houthis have vowed to retaliate and declared they would continue targeting U.S. and allied vessels in the Red Sea.
Houthi leader, Abdul Malik al-Houthi, stating his group’s decision, said their attacks would persist as long as the U.S. and its allies struck Yemen.
The group has linked its military operations to the ongoing war in Gaza, claiming to act in support of the Palestinians.
Since November 2023, Houthi forces have carried out numerous assaults on commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea, sinking two ships and seizing another.
The U.S., however, dismissed Houthi’s justifications, stressing the need to protect international shipping and deter further aggression.
The U.S. National Security Advisor, Michael Waltz, stated that U.S strikes had targeted key Houthi leaders, while U.S Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth promised an “unrelenting” missile campaign.
Trump, addressing the rebels directly, declared that, “hell will rain down upon you like nothing you have ever seen before.”
Meanwhile, Iran has denied direct involvement in the Houthi attacks. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, condemning the U.S. strikes, called for an end to American and Israeli military actions in the region.
“End support for Israeli genocide and terrorism. Stop killing of Yemeni people,” Araghchi posted on social media.
