Carabao Cup: Newcastle Defeat Liverpool To Win First Trophy In 70 Years

Newcastle United defeated Liverpool 2-1 at the Wembley Stadium to win the Carabao Cup trophy, which earned them their first major trophy in 70 years.

The Magpies were the underdogs against the Liverpool side still reeling from their Champions League exit at the hands of PSG last week.

Eddie Howe’s men battered Liverpool on their way to victory, recording a total of 17 shots with six on target compared to the Reds’ seven shots and two on target all through the encounter.

Dan Burn gave Newcastle United the lead on the stroke of halftime with a thumping header to give them a deserved lead going into the break.

Alexander Isak added the second goal with an instinctive finish to make it 2-0 seven minutes after the break.

Liverpool struggled to find their bearings in the encounter but substitute Jones managed to earn them their first shot on target when his effort was saved by Nick Pope.

Chiesa reduced the deficit for Liverpool in the 91st minute with a tidy finish to end the clash 2-1, earning Newcastle United their first major title since the 1969 Fairs Cup and first domestic silverware since the 1955 FA Cup.

Eddie Howe the first Englishman to win a major domestic trophy in England since Harry Redknapp won the FA Cup with Portsmouth in 2008.
