Manchester United’s summer transfer plans were dealt a major blow on Friday as Geovany Quenda completed a shock move to Chelsea.
The Sporting Lisbon youngster had been a priority target for Ruben Amorim, with United keen on him for months, even before the new head coach’s arrival.
Once Amorim took charge, speculation surrounding Quenda’s potential switch to Old Trafford only intensified.

INEOS were reportedly discussing a £33m deal, with the player having agreed personal terms ahead of a move.
However, Chelsea acted swiftly and wrapped up the deal before United could finalise their approach, with financial constraints slowing down the Red Devils’ efforts.
Quenda’s signing for Chelsea has forced United to rethink their right wing-back options.
While missing out on Amorim’s former player is a setback, the club still have plenty of names on their radar.
Roger Fernandes has emerged as an exciting alternative, with the 18-year-old actually outperforming Quenda in Portugal this season.
Red Devils remain in contact with Jeremie Frimpong
However, a proven option could also be on the table, as Graeme Bailey has told United in Focus that Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong remains in the frame.
“Jeremie Frimpong is a player that Manchester United had a historical interest in back in 2023 under Erik ten Hag,” Bailey said.
“I am told they pushed for him.”
Since then, the Dutch international has become one of the most sought-after right-backs in Europe.
Both Manchester City and Liverpool have been holding talks over a potential transfer.
“Man City and Liverpool have both been in talks with him.

“They like him and the player I am told is ready to return to England,” Bailey added.
Despite that, United have not given up and remain in communication with Frimpong’s camp.
“United as it stands am told have maintained communication with his people, they know what is going on.
“But they are not at the head of the queue at this stage,” he continued.
A move for Frimpong would likely cost between £40m and £50m.
A fee which would be a major financial commitment for a position of real importance in Amorim’s system.

Frimpong’s attacking prowess aligns well with what Amorim demands from his wing-backs, with his qualities closely mirroring Quenda’s.
FBRef even lists Frimpong as the sixth most similar player to Quenda, highlighting the shared strengths between the two.
However, with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Frimpong may consider his next move carefully.
Joshua Zirkzee’s recent omission from the Netherlands squad due to his United struggles could serve as a warning.
It may potentially play a role in Frimpong’s decision.
If United push forward with a move, they would be getting a ready-made option entering his prime.
Rather than a young talent still needing time to adapt.
However, the price tag and contract demands may see INEOS focus on a younger alternative instead.
