Tacoma Police Chief Avery Moore has submitted his resignation to City Manager Elizabeth Pauli, marking the end of his nearly three-year tenure leading the Tacoma Police Department. His resignation will be effective February 3, 2025.
“Today, I formally submitted my resignation to City Manager Elizabeth Pauli, marking the conclusion of my tenure as Chief of Police in Tacoma, Washington,” Moore said in a statement. “After 35 incredible years in law enforcement, I have made the heartfelt decision to step away from this noble profession and transition into the next chapter of my life.”
Moore was appointed by City Manager Elizabeth Pauli and confirmed by the Tacoma City Council in December 2021. He officially assumed the role of police chief in February 2022. Before leading the department, he served as an assistant police chief in Dallas, overseeing the northeast division in Lake Highlands and emerging as a finalist for Dallas police chief in 2020.
Reflecting on his career, Moore expressed pride in the progress made during his time in Tacoma, particularly in crime reduction, community engagement, and strengthening public trust in law enforcement.
“During my time in Tacoma, I focused on key goals that were close to my heart: reducing overall crime, fostering trust and legitimacy within the community, and strengthening engagement with the people we are sworn to serve and protect,” he said. “Together, we achieved meaningful progress, and I am deeply grateful for the collaboration and support of this remarkable community.”
Moore also thanked the officers of the Tacoma Police Department for their dedication and professionalism, noting that he leaves with confidence in their continued commitment to public service.
“To the men and women of the Tacoma Police Department, thank you for your unwavering dedication and professionalism,” Moore said. “Your commitment to excellence and service has been inspiring, and I leave knowing the department is in capable hands, ready to continue making a positive impact.”
His message to the residents of Tacoma was one of gratitude and appreciation for the relationships built and the trust placed in him during his tenure.
“To the people of Tacoma, it has been my greatest pleasure to serve each of you as your Chief of Police,” he said. “I am humbled by the trust you have placed in me and will forever cherish the relationships and memories forged during my time here. While I am stepping away from law enforcement, my commitment to this community and its success will remain steadfast.”
Moore’s departure marks the end of a law enforcement career spanning 35 years. His leadership in Tacoma has been defined by efforts to reduce crime and improve police-community relations. His successor has yet to be named, and the city will determine its next steps in appointing new leadership for the Tacoma Police Department.
“Thank you, Tacoma, for allowing me to be a part of your journey. It has been an honor beyond measure,” Moore said.
