Quan Chi is slated to be the next DLC character added to Mortal Kombat 1 via the Kombat Pass. Though he had a role in Mortal Kombat 1’s main story, he was temporarily relegated to being a NPC when the game was initially launched.
Earlier this week, Ed Boon had hinted that we’d receive a gameplay trailer for Quan Chi at CCXP in Brazil. Rumors suggested that the trailer would drop around 11:00 a.m. PT / 2:00 p.m. ET.
Similar to how Tremor was also showcased as a Kameo during Omni-Man’s trailer, Quan Chi has seemingly been paired up with one of the upcoming DLC Kameo characters. Fans were correct in determining that Khameleon would also make her gameplay debut with this latest trailer.
Prior to Mortal Kombat 1, Quan Chi had not been seen since Mortal Kombat X where he was killed by Scorpion during the main story. Though many characters were “revived” — brought from the past into the future — in Mortal Kombat 11, Quan Chi was strangely absent from Mortal Kombat 11’s events.
Regardless, Quan Chi has been a major player in the Mortal Kombat lore since Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero and Mortal Kombat 4. Events would even be retconned so that Quan Chi, not BI-Han, would murder Scorpion’s family.
Quan Chi appears to be most similar to how he appeared in Mortal Kombat X. In particular, he has seemingly retained his ability to extend the reach of his limbs through the usage of portals, just like with the Warlock variation in Mortal Kombat X.
He also appears to have teamed up with some sort of Kraken-like creature. With certain attacks, Quan Chi will summon portals in which tentacles are able to attack from.
Additionally, Quan Chi still has his skull projectiles. These can either be fired from the ground or while airborne. A larger, purple variant of the skull projectile can also be shot, which is able to consume other projectiles in its trajectory.
Against Shang Tsung, Quan Chi demonstrates a special move in which he immobilizes the opponent in a bone prison. While encased in this prison, the other player is still permitted to attack, but they’re not able to move very far from the position in which they were imprisoned at.
As expected, Khameleon gives the player access to moves that are typically part of Kitana, Mileena, and Jade’s movesets. At the moment, it’s unknown if there’s any sort of mechanic behind which character Khameleon emulates or if each Kameo option is just assigned to a unique input.
One of Khameleon’s specials grants Jade’s glow to the point character. This makes it so that projectiles harmlessly pass through them, which might just be a straight up improvement compared to Kameo Sub-Zero’s Ice Armor that grants protection against no more than six projectile hits.
At the end of the trailer, we’re even given a sneak peek at Peacemaker. While we don’t get to see anything related to his gameplay just yet, he does have some sort of exchange with Quan Chi.
