Fighting game community X (formerly Twitter) has a slick trend going on right now. A challenge was presented on the platform by bottleofmoe that asked Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 players to share a combo they’ve come up with that uses at least six bars of super meter without using TACs, and more specifically, TAC infinites.
The people happily obliged, and one of the combos shared that fits this criteria is among the most insane Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 combos ever crafted. X user ddggrrss uploaded a Hsien-Ko combo that actually uses a staggering 10 bars of super meter in the same sequence, and while it’s technically possible to actually perform it, there is very, very little chance we’ll ever be able to see a human actually pull it off.
In UMvC3, Hsien-Ko isn’t considered to be all that good of a character. However, under certain circumstances, she definitely has some redeemable qualities that can be tremendously good.
One such quality is her projectile, which can be thrown at various arcs and speeds. What makes her projectile unique is that the item she actually throws varies depending on timing and RNG, and if the timing is frame-perfect and the luck is there, she can toss a powerful star or bonsai tree item that leaves a grounded opponent stunned for 120 frames — which equates to two full in-real-life seconds.
This combo from ddggrrss uses Hsien-Ko’s star toss as the glue that holds everything together and allows her to string together 10 supers in one go.
The sequence begins with Hsien-Ko equipped with a full five bars of super. Things kick off with a basic bread and butter air combo into a knockdown, then ddggrrss fires off Hsien-Ko’s gong strike and cancels into her spike ball super — which OTGs.
Rinsing and repeating those last two maneuvers over and over again lets Hsien-Ko increase the super tally until she reaches her final bar of super. With the combo taking place in the far right corner of the stage, Hsien-Ko delivers her ground sword super to the opponent and starts carrying them to the other side of the screen.
Chasing her foe down and using Spencer’s grappling assist sees Hsien-Ko restand the opponent, and this is where the crazy stuff starts. As the training dummy becomes grounded again, Hsien-Ko clobbers them with her star projectile, which stuns them in place and leaves them open to a follow up attack.
Ddggrrss continues to use the star projectile over and over again, which acts as an infinite combo and keeps the opponent stunned until Hsien-Ko can build a whole five super bars back. Once she does, she goes right back into the gong into spike ball super loop, which allows her to achieve 10 supers in one combo.
The thing about getting either the bonsai tree or the star is that it is insanely tricky. There are 11 different items that Hsien-Ko has the ability to throw with this projectile, and to keep this explanation as simple as I can… there is a random element involved in deciding what item comes out initially.
It is possible, however, that once you’ve gotten an item out, you can influence what item comes out next if you happen to know what item follows it on the list. Even if you do know what comes next, your timing needs to be incredibly on point to produce the same item over and over again.
With that being said, it is basically guaranteed that the combo creator here used tool-assistance to perform this sequence. Tool-assistance use computer programming to make it so that things are executed flawlessly every time and that they get the right item they needed up front.
So, while this combo is technically possible for a human to perform in a real match, the likelihood of all of the correct conditions being met and the execution being absolutely perfect is virtually impossible. Still, it’s amazing to see what is possible to do in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and this combo certainly pushes those limits.
