The Emotional Exhaustion of Jonathan Van Ness: The Importance of Allyship in the Trans Rights Debate

October 5, 2023

– Jonathan Van Ness, star of Netflix’s “Queer Eye,” expressed emotional exhaustion during an interview with Dax Shepard on his podcast. He discussed the fight for trans rights and the need for inclusivity for trans youth.
– The debate over whether trans women should be able to compete in women’s sports continues to be a contentious issue. Van Ness and other activists argue that this debate erases trans people’s identities and experiences.
– Research shows that arguments against trans athletes, such as claims of unfair advantages, are not supported by evidence. The ongoing debate and rollback of trans rights have real consequences for trans youth, leading to increased discrimination and negative mental health outcomes.

Full Story

The emotional toll of advocating for trans rights was brought to light by Jonathan Van Ness, star of “Queer Eye”, during an interview on the “Armchair Expert” podcast with Dax Shepard. Van Ness expressed his exhaustion from constantly fighting for the inclusion of transgender children, stating, “I’m so tired of having to, like, fight for little kids because they just want to be included.” These conversations often erase the identities and experiences of trans individuals and highlight the need for greater education and understanding from allies.

The debate surrounding trans athletes has also gained significant attention, with conservatives arguing that trans women and girls have an unfair advantage over cisgender athletes. However, research and real-life experiences do not support these claims. A report commissioned by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport found no evidence of performance advantages for trans women compared to elite cis-women athletes. Similarly, a study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that trans women in the US Air Force had comparable muscle strength to cisgender peers after hormone treatments. The rhetoric against trans inclusion is filled with misinformation and disinformation, causing further harm to the trans community.

Beyond the fairness argument, it is important to recognize the benefits of sports participation for trans youth. Organized sports contribute to cognitive development, academic success, and mental health outcomes. Nonetheless, only a small percentage of transgender girls report playing on sports teams, highlighting their underrepresentation in women’s sports.

Perhaps most concerning is the impact of the ongoing debate on the well-being of trans youth. Studies have demonstrated the adverse mental health consequences faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in states with anti-LGBTQ+ laws. The rollback of trans rights and the associated discrimination contribute to increased mental and physical health issues among trans youth. Allies are crucial in shifting the narrative and standing up against the harm caused by anti-trans rhetoric.

In conclusion, the exhaustion experienced by advocates like Jonathan Van Ness highlights the importance of amplifying the voices and experiences of the transgender community. The misconceptions and misinformation surrounding trans rights and trans athletes not only impede progress but also have real-life consequences for trans youth. Allies must join together to speak out against discrimination and support the inclusion and well-being of the transgender community.
