PND Ketchup and Mustard walk us through these amazing outliers
Every fighting game has its share of popular characters and those that are not so popular. As a result, it’s not uncommon to see the lesser liked fighters go underrepresented and get explored less, but sometimes not digging deeper into what all they have to offer is a mistake.
Prominent commentators and NetherRealm Studios games fans PND Ketchup and Mustard continue to chronicle the Mortal Kombat franchise’s competitive history. Today, we are treated to their latest video which covers five Mortal Kombat characters across the series’ full lifespan that weren’t popular, but actually ended up being amazing in high level play.
The first character on the list is none other than Mortal Kombat X’s resident tag team duo, Ferra/Torr. These combatants worked together as one fighter, with the giant Torr being the main point man and the much smaller Ferra hanging out on his shoulders and being used to supplement the big guy’s tool set.
At first glance, Ferra/Torr had all of the traits of a large, big body character that would be too slow or have to work too hard to contend with the top tiers in the game. However, by the final version of the game this fighter proved to be a real threat due to having immense damage and incredible range on their attacks.
Moving on to a title from back in the 3D era, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon featured easily one of the franchise’s least popular characters ever created on its roster. Meat was a secret character in the 2006 fighting game and was basically a skinless human that fought using Hsu Hao’s wrestling style from Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance.
As Ketchup and Mustard explain it, Meat actually had a one-button command throw that he could utilize in battle, and as luck would have it, this maneuver lead to an infinite when the opponent was positioned against the wall. This command throw acts as a hard knockdown with a set wake up timing, and because there is no way for the opponent to stay on the ground, jump, or do much else in time, Meat can continue looping this grab over and over again thanks to the reduced pushback the wall provides.
There’s much more to what makes Meat an incredible character at high level, and even more unpopular characters to learn about here. Be sure to watch Ketchup and Mustard’s full video below.
