Manchester United have been knocked out of the EFL Cup after a chaotic game against Spurs.
Both teams appeared desperate to throw the game away, with mistake after mistake dominating the match.
Despite the result, United showed flashes of progress.
However, lapses in concentration and basic errors ultimately cost them.
United started brightly, but it was Spurs who struck first.
Dominic Solanke capitalised on a rebound from Altay Bayindir, slotting home to give the hosts the lead.
United remained strong throughout the first half, creating the better openings but failing to convert them into chances.
The second half, however, began disastrously for the visitors.
Lisandro Martinez made two critical errors in the opening 10 minutes of the half, gifting Spurs a 3-0 lead seemingly out of nowhere.
In response, Ruben Amorim acted, introducing Amad Diallo, Joshua Zirkzee, and Kobbie Mainoo.
The changes paid off as United looked instantly more dangerous.
Two errors from Fraser Forster brought United back into the game, thanks to substitutes Zirkzee and Amad, whose relentless pressure forced the mistakes.
At 3-2, United felt firmly back in the contest.
Spurs were pinned into their own half and appeared rattled.
However, with just minutes remaining, Son scored directly from a corner, a disastrous set-piece concession after Bayindir failed to clear under pressure.
Jonny Evans managed to pull one back for United with a header from a corner, but it was too little, too late.
The match ended 4-3.
While the scoreline didn’t favor United, Amorim may take solace in the performance.
With an xG of 2.58 compared to Spurs’ 0.78, United were undone by their own mistakes rather than being outplayed.
