Manchester United faced Chelsea in Ruud van Nistelrooy’s second game in charge, following a 5-2 thrashing of Leicester in the EFL Cup.
Van Nistelrooy knew this would be a tougher test, and it proved to be.
Manchester United started brightly, pressing effectively and staying compact off the ball.
A few sloppy mistakes in possession led to some half-chances for Chelsea, but United held steady overall.
Chelsea gradually grew into the game, dominating possession and creating opportunities, though the best chance of the half fell to Marcus Rashford just before the break.
Rashford side-footed his shot against the woodwork, squandering a golden opportunity to put United ahead.
The second half continued in a similar fashion, with United struggling to control the game.
Only for Casemiro to play a sensational ball over the top of Wesley Fofana, finding Rasmus Hojlund, who rounded Robert Sanchez but was brought down in the box.
Bruno Fernandes stepped up and calmly converted the penalty, putting United ahead.
Their lead didn’t last long, as Moises Caicedo smashed in a volley after a Chelsea corner to equalise.
Both sides had only a couple of half-chances afterward, and the game finished 1-1.
With Ruben Amorim confirmed as the new head coach, van Nistelrooy can be satisfied with a point as he steadies the ship before Amorim’s arrival.
