Depending on where you were playing, it used to be that using the throw mechanic while playing another person on a Street Fighter 2 arcade cabinet very well might earn you a punch to the face. I find it hard to come up with a more apropos example of unofficial rules that have evolved in the fighting game community.
This is the exact topic of content creator JM Crofts’ recent experiment as he took to social media to ask FGC fans to help him come up with 10 such unspoken rules fighting game player most hate seeing broken.
If it’s in the game, it’s fair game… right? That kind of policy technically checks out, but rage quit one too many times or mash a little too much and you very well might find yourself not invited back the next time your community gets together.
Most of these aren’t nearly as hardcore as the above example from old school arcades, but we’d be lying if we said we didn’t notice things like when people offer a little too much unsolicited advice… especially when emotions are particularly high following an intense loss.
A lot of this comes down to simply being aware and courteous of other peoples’ time and feelings. That often comes from things like lack of acknowledgement, or indirect digs/implications of someone’s lack of skill.
You’ll have to watch the full video to get the rest of the rules, and we’d love to hear your thoughts and reactions to it in the comments once you’re done. Are there any unwritten rules JM and his followers missed? Let us know below.
